Burnt area and damage degree

Between a pre-fire and a post-fire Sentinel-2 composite, the record maps what burnt and how hard, in five classes from unburnt to high. A claims desk gets the extent and severity of a fire on the claimed ground, with the scenes it came from.

For forest owners and associations, forest insurers, and claims desks settling fire losses. Claims validation calls the same reading for fire claims.

Copernicus Sentinel-2
  1. 01

Damage degree is a spectral severity class. It describes how much the canopy and ground changed, and it is not a share of value lost.

  2. 02

The classes were checked against fires graded by USGS MTBS and by Copernicus EMS, none of which were used to tune them.
