Claims validation

A claim arrives with a loss date, a boundary and an amount. The record shows what moved on that parcel, by how much, and on which dated scenes, so the desk can decide whether to send an adjuster.

For claims managers, claims handlers and the loss adjusters working with regional and mutual insurers.

01 · The order

What you send, and what comes back

You send

  • The claim parcel, drawn or uploaded as KML, zipped shapefile or GeoJSON
  • The date of loss
  • The type of loss: flood, fire, storm or other
  • The claimed amount, if you want it printed on the record

You receive

  • A PDF record of the parcel before and after the loss, with every scene dated
  • Flood: newly flooded ground as a map layer, in hectares and as a share of the parcel, with radar images from before and after
  • Fire: the burnt extent and its damage degree, from the burnt area product
  • Storm: the parcel’s change read against its own earlier years
  • Any flood, fire or forest record already run over the same ground, listed beside the claim

02 · How it is read

Public sources

Copernicus Sentinel-1Copernicus Sentinel-2JRC Global Surface Water
  1. 01

For a flood the record leads with radar. Sentinel-1 sees through the cloud that sits over most floods, so the first look comes within days of the loss rather than weeks.

  2. 02

Permanent water from the JRC Global Surface Water record is taken out, so a river or a reservoir is never counted as flood.

  3. 03

The record says what the ground shows. Whether the claim is paid stays with the desk.

What it has been measured against

Each figure is printed with its denominator and scope in the paper it links to.

23 ha
of a 114 ha claim parcel at Conselice read newly flooded, from radar passes two and three days after the May 2023 floods
